June, the month of weddings, is here already but we certainly don’t need a Hallmark moment to spread the love.
The idea of true love is not proven by flowers, fancy dinners, or other material thoughts. Love is truly not a box of chocolates and is best defined by a series of selfless acts.
My comments should not be viewed as a diatribe on romantic love. Books, songs, poems and movies do that job rather profusely.
Selfless, unconditional love called “agape” is what we should strive for as it is most needed but most lacking in our society today. Kindness and compassion should be the emotion of the day, especially when so many are suffering.
By helping others, we help ourselves, and hate is so evident on so many fronts today. The only panacea for hate is unconditional love. It is past time to demonstrate our efforts.
We can advocate for others, donate to charities and volunteer spare time to organizations that provide services to our community. As we look around our city we see the people that do “step up to the plate” and ultimately make a huge difference in the lives of others. There have been other catastrophic events in history, like COVID-19, and it is certainly likely there will be more.
There have been those among us who are sick, hungry and homeless. The richest country in the world sees it happen right before our eyes. In the words of a 13th Century poet who is still quoted often, “Love is a bridge between you and everything. Your heart knows the way. Run in that direction.”
