SPRINGPORT, MI -- Randy and Brandy Neelis are granting a longtime superintendent’s wish by donating an electronic sign to Springport Public Schools.

Superintendent Randy Cook has wanted this kind of sign for several years to help spread good news about the school and it’s students, but said it’s an extra cost. A cost that’s now being covered by the Neelises.

Cook was Springport’s superintendent for 11 years before retiring in 2018. He returned as interim superintendent in January when Bob Cassiday left to become superintendent of Byron Area Schools, but will head back into retirement when Christie Robinson, who comes from Galesburg-Augusta Community Schools, takes over the job on July 1.

Randy Neelis, owner of five local Biggby Coffee franchises, and his wife graduated from Springport High School. Each of their five children either attend or have graduated from the district, too.

Randy, 54, learned of Cook’s wish for an electronic sign while coaching wresting at Springport and agreed it was a good way to recognize students’ good efforts.

“That’s always hit home for me, because I feel that that is really important for the development of young individuals to be recognized for their achievements,” Randy said.

Currently, the sign’s foundation is complete, with Randy doing some of the work himself. However, the COVID-19 pandemic has delayed some electrical components needed for the 6-foot sign that also will display pictures, Randy said. It’s hoped it can be installed in mid-July, he said.

Cook is thrilled that his wish is coming true. The Neelises are a good example of people who are successful but haven’t forgotten about the community they come from, he said.

The sign is a way to give back to a community he loves, Randy said.

“I went to school there and I was a wrestler for that school,” Neelis said. “And I always loved the Springport school district. This was a way for me to give back and I thought this was a good purpose for it.”
