Patrick Mahomes Wants Touchdown Sensors in Footballs

By Andrew Cohen

Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes is in favor of embedding sensors in footballs to alert officials when they cross the goal line. The former MVP recently made that suggestion while appearing on a podcast for Whoop, the wearable fitness technology company that he invested in last October.

“I’ve always thought the chip in the ball has to happen sometime, where if you cross the line, it just tells you a touchdown,” Mahomes said on the podcast.

“But it’s also the human error thing, it’s kind of like baseball, balls and strikes, it’s just part of the game,” he added. “The biggest thing to me is when they get in the pile by the end zone, there is literally no way to tell if he’s in the end zone or not. It’s like you said, it’s just whatever they call. ... I’m sure it’ll happen soon enough.”

RFID (radio frequency identification) chips have been embedded in Wilson footballs used during NFL games since the 2017 season. The chips, made by Zebra Technologies, are used to track on-field location data that powers the NFL’s Next Gen Stats system. The league’s current deal with Zebra expires after next year’s Super Bowl.

“You can put a chip in the ball, but then you better put a chip in the guy’s knee, too,” former NFL VP of officiating Mike Pereira said in 2017. “The ball is one thing, but it’s not over until the knee hits the ground or the shoulder hits the ground. How accurate is that going to be?”
