North Judson will not be buying its own electronic speed signs, despite some residents’ claims that they would improve safety. Town Marshal Kelly Fisher presented a few options to the town council last week, ranging from $2,900 up to almost $5,500.

The town recently borrowed a sign from Traffic Control Specialists. Fisher said the signs might help at first, but their impact wears off over time. “I did the research,” she said. “They’re nice signs, but I mean, after you by a sign so many times, you know what it says.”

But beyond that, Fisher noted that oftentimes, there aren’t as many speeders as people think there are.

Council President John Rowe felt that if Fisher wasn’t completely sold on it, the money could probably be better used elsewhere, like increasing patrols. “It’s like a $5,400 yard ornament, a short-term fix,” Rowe said.

In the end, Fisher agreed to hold off on buying an electronic speed sign, but said the town could ask to borrow one again, if the need arises.
