Marianne Williamson Says She'll 'Harness Love' to Defeat Donald Trump in 2020 — And Twitter Had a Lot to Say - Newsweek

2020 Democratic candidate Marianne Williamson vowed to defeat President Donald Trump by harnessing "love" during her closing statement at the Democratic presidential debate on Thursday evening — and Twitter had a lot to say in response.

Williamson — a self-help author, spiritual leader and friend of Oprah Winfrey — left many viewers perplexed throughout round two of the Democratic debates by offering a range of takes on some fairly straightforward issues, but her oddest statement of all came during her closing statement.

"Mr. President, if you're listening, I want you to hear me please: You have harnessed fear for political purposes, and only love can cast that out," she said. "So I, sir, I have a feeling you know what you're doing. I'm going to harness love for political purposes. I will meet you on that field, and sir, love will win."

When asked how she would lower the cost of prescription drugs, Williamson sidestepped the question by announcing that Trump won in 2016 just by saying "Make America Great Again." Williamson went on to call healthcare policies "superficial fixes."

"We have to get deeper than just these superficial fixes as important as they are," she said. "Even if we're just talking about the superficial fixes, ladies and gentlemen, we don't have a health care system in the United States, we have a sickness care system in the United States. We just wait until somebody gets sick and then we talk about who is going pay for the treatment and how they're going to be treated."

On what she would do first as president, Williamson said she plans to "call the prime minister of New Zealand, who said her goal was to make New Zealand the place where it's the best place in the world for a child to grow up. And I will tell her, 'Girlfriend, you are so on.' Because the United States of America is going to be the best place in the world for a child to grow up."

Despite her lack of substantive policy proposals, Williamson left thousands of Twitter users talking on social media. According to Axios, via Google Trends, Williamson quickly became one of the most searched for 2020 candidates that took part in Thursday's debate in the hours after the event.

Here are some responses to Williamson's performance:
