‘I love you for being real’: Ivanka Trump lauds her father in personal terms - POLITICO

White House adviser Ivanka Trump praised her father for “being real” in a Republican National Convention address Thursday that sought to play down President Donald Trump’s incendiary rhetoric and divisive policies.

“Tonight, I stand before you as the proud daughter of the people’s president,” Trump told a packed-in audience of about 2,000 supporters on the White House South Lawn, minutes before her father delivered his nomination acceptance speech.

Criticizing the nation’s capital as dysfunctional and slow-moving, Trump said her father “did not come to Washington to win praise from the Beltway elites.”

And although the president has “strong convictions,” Trump said, “you always know where he stands.”

“I recognize that my dad’s communication style is not to everyone’s taste. And I know that his tweets can feel a bit unfiltered,” she added. “But the results — the results speak for themselves.”

Trump’s remarks were notable in that she has been largely reluctant to weigh in on her father’s more controversial statements and explosive social media posts throughout her tenure in the West Wing.

She also generally avoids launching political assaults in the way her father and brothers, Donald Jr. and Eric, are more prone to do.

Ivanka Trump is the latest member of the president’s family who has attempted during the four-night GOP convention to smooth over his rougher edges and cast him in more personal terms.

“Dad, people attack you for being unconventional,” she said. “But I love you for being real, and I respect you for being effective.”
