The Museum of Modern Electronic Music (MOMEM) will present opportunities to explore and “relive the historical dimensions and influences of Electronic Music,” as stated on MOMEM’s website.
The museum will feature exhibition rooms, performance areas and installations, and a library comprising extensive electronic music history. It will also include an academy — where lectures and workshops will be held by established DJs, producers, and artists.
German DJ Sven Väth will launch MOMEM with a performance titled “Sven Väth — It's Simple To Tell What Saved Us From Hell.” In collaboration with sculptor Tobias Rehberger, the concert will explore Väth’s private archive of art, records, photographs, flyers, films, and sounds.
“There is no better opening exhibition for MOMEM,” said Alex Azary, MOMEM’s director. “Because Sven Väth and Tobias Rehberger have each, in their own way, taken electronic music culture from Frankfurt to the world.”
The brainchild of German DJ Andreas Tomalla (also known as Talla 2XLC), MOMEM started out from his “Technoclub,” a weekly techno party in Frankfurt from 1984 to 2000.
MOMEM's projects and proposed launch were first announced in 2015. Delays up to this point were due to issues regarding funding and the search for a suitable location.
With support from The City of Frankfurt, organizers of MOMEM have for the past two years been rebuilding the former children’s museum in the Hauptwache — a plaza in Frankfurt located at the city’s center — to house MOMEM’s exhibits.
“I am delighted MOMEM believed in their idea for so long — hundreds of press articles from all over the world testify not only to the museum, but also to electronic music as a whole,” stated Peter Feldmann, Frankfurt’s Mayor. “[MOMEM] is an asset for Frankfurt and a great leap forward.”
