WATCH: Caleb Love Windmill Dunk - 247Sports

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. -- North Carolina guard Caleb Love showed off his immense athleticism early in the first half against Elon on Saturday night with a crazy windmill dunk on the fast break. It was UNC’s first made basket of the night and it sparked a 7-0 run for the Tar Heels.

The sophomore point guard has made it nearly a nightly occurrence. Love is a ballhawk on the perimeter, jumping passes rather timely or picking the opposing guard's pocket while he's occupied by another Tar Heel defender.

It was a slow start offensively for UNC in its first game since defeating Georgia Tech on the road last weekend. It was 0-of-4 from the floor prior to Love's steal and slam and its first six points of the night came from free throws. The 6-foot-4 guard scored seven of the Tar Heels' first points following up his dunk with a three-point shot from the wing on the baseline out-of-bounds play drawn up for him.

Love, who hails from St. Louis, Mo., is averaging a team-high 16.3 points per game this season while shooting 44.4 percent from the floor and 40.5 percent from three. Both are significant improvements from a year ago in which he averaged 10.5 points while shooting 31.6 percent from the floor and 26.6 percent from beyond-the-arc. He made 34 treys last season. He has 15 in the first eight games of this season.

Another improvement to Love's game has been his decision making and ability to be a floor general. He finished the 2020-21 season with a 1.1 assist-turnover ratio. That number has more than doubled so far during the 2021-22 campaign (2.3) with 34 assists to 15 turnovers.

His improved play has earned him immense trust from first-year head coach Hubert Davis, who has kept a tight rotation in the early goings of the season. Love is leading the team with 33.8 minutes per game. Fellow point guard R.J. Davis is second with 30.4 minutes per game.

"At any given time those are the guys that can make shots, but they also can consistently create shots," the Tar Heel head coach said after the Georgia Tech win. "And I think (against Ga. Tech) they had 10 assists, four turnovers. They're taking care of the basketball and distributing and not turning the ball over, they've been great all year and I'm very very proud of them."

Love, a former McDonald's All-American, earned preseason honors as he was selected to the All-ACC second team with nine votes. Armando Bacot was named to the preseason All-ACC first team. UNC is projected to finish third in the ACC regular season standings and currently sits at 6-2 overall, 1-0 in the ACC.
