The winners of the county Department of Public Works Solid Waste Division’s Electronic Waste (eWaste) Contest were awarded their prizes last week.

The contest tasked students from around the island to bring eWaste to Resource Recovery Solutions, which operates the Puhi Metals Recycling Facility, for a chance to win an assortment of prizes.

This year’s prize theme was focused on getting outside and going on adventures. Many of the prizes were for adventure tours, including ziplining, ATV rides, Na Pali boat tours and horseback riding. Prizes for younger students included Fun Factory gift cards and iPads.

“We were overjoyed to offer these special prizes to the students,” said Keola Aki, recycling programs coordinator, in a press release. “We’re so excited that our local families get to have new experiences and make special memories together right here on Kaua‘i. Mahalo to everyone involved in this fun and educational event.”

Mayor Derek S. K. Kawakami also attended the prize giveaway and congratulated students for their hard work and care for the environment.

The contest was funded by a state Department of Health grant, awarded to the county to promote eWaste recycling.

The Solid Waste Division appreciates all the parents and students who participated, helping to keep eWaste out of the landfill. Electronic waste recycling is available from 7:30 a.m.-3:30 p.m. Monday through Friday at the Puhi Metals Recycling Facility.
