There is an infomercial currently on television that depicts a police officer knocking on a door of a home, a woman opens the door. The officer explains that her son had been killed in a crash. The woman stands there trying to absorb the terrible words she just heard, disbelieving.
I had a similar experience 28 years ago, a call that my fraternal twin had been in a very serious accident and I needed to get to the hospital very quickly. I rushed to the hospital and pulled up to the emergency room. I was met by a police officer and someone else who escorted me into a small chair lined room which then filled with several other people, medical and police.
A surgeon came into the room and told me my brother was dead and what he had done to try to save him. I had had a vision of his death two days before and I told him I knew it, I knew it before I got there. The surgeon handed me a small tray with a wet wallet, my brother’s keys, cigarillos and blood-specked glasses.
When I left that room that night I was in total shock, I had lost a brother, hopes for a better relationship with him dashed upon some asphalt in a crash.
I only tell you this because, for those who enter that hell of the reality of losing a loved one, I can only hope they have told their loved one that they love them. They may not ever have another chance to say so.
