Nashville's Love Language, European food with Southern flair, closes - Tennessean

Laura Binkley and her husband were regulars at Love Language, a Nashville restaurant focused on small, shareable portions on 20th Ave. South, near Vanderbilt. Dishes were inspired by Spain, Italy and France, but presented with a Southern flare.

On weekends, the Binkleys traveled here from West Nashville to taste the brunch menu. Lobster avocado toast. Mimosas and seasonal drinks. Shrimp and grits with Tasso ham tomato gravy. Steak and eggs, and more.

“Everything we had tasted good,” she said.

So when Binkley learned Love Language closed, effective Jan. 3, she joined a group of disappointed yet understanding patrons.

Owner Crosby Keltner informed his team, including executive chef Marcus Rhodes, that the eatery’s financials, when compared to overhead, wasn’t sustainable.

“There’s been several restaurants that have been open for 15-plus years that have recently closed or decided to sell,” said Keltner, who has lived in Nashville for two decades.

"Food is our love language" served as the motto for Love Language, located on 20th Ave. South. The restaurant closed on Jan. 3.

“I think a lot of restaurants survived Covid and were really hoping for the bounce back. There are a lot of restaurants that have recently closed and a lot of restaurants that haven’t closed, but are definitely struggling. A lot of restaurants are counting on their local diners, their communities, their neighborhoods and we were no different.”

News of the closure led to a social media outpouring from former customers that celebrated not only the woodfire grill eats and drinks, but the environment and service.

Laura Binkley (bottom right) and her husband, Chris, became regulars last year at Love Language on 20th Ave. South after having brunch there with family members Courtney Jankowski, Emma Binkley, Billie Smallwood and Russell Smallwood. The restaurant closed on Jan. 3.

Looking back, Keltner said patronage on Fridays and Saturdays wasn’t the challenge; neither was filling an upstairs event space for parties. The issue was foot traffic during the week.

Keltner hopes to rebound in the coming months with a new or modified concept.
