What I love about my home in Silver Spring - Washington Post

We were looking for a place to combine the feel of nature and the ease of being able to work in the DMV region. Being J.R.R. Tolkien fans, we found a little piece of “Middle-earth” between our jobs and within easy reach of urban accessibility, and we named it the Link Shire.

To arrive at the Link Shire, you turn down a longer-than-average driveway, which sets the home back from the houses along the main road. That’s where the enchantment begins to happen. The oldest willow tree in the neighborhood welcomes us home with long extending arms. The white picket fence emphasizes the warm greeting you will receive when you relax on the porch and listen to the birds singing.

The various rooms have unique character. The living room is accented with antique red brick, and a fireplace outlined in black stone has a floating black marble mantle. From there you access our favorite room: a three-season enclosed patio with rich wood tones overlooking the serene view of two hammocks ideal for a Sunday afternoon siesta.

We incorporated an epoxy floor in the basement featuring a river flowing into the various rooms. The design reflects Sheree’s love for stained glass and the multiple projects created in the Glass Link studio, which is the largest room of the basement.

Why do we love the Link Shire? It is a magical escape from daily routine, filled with color and nature, with easy access to amenities and our commute.

In this ongoing feature, we ask homeowners what they love most about their home. If you’d like to share your story, please send a photo of the room/feature you love (preferably with you in the photo, too) and 300 to 400 words describing the space and why you love it to: mlerner@gmail.com.
