It’s funny how even though they’re gone, they are all still here. Last week I had an awful cold that kept me home for days. Wrapped up in my grandfather’s robe, under mom’s blankets, watching Todd’s favorite shows, then baking grandma’s cookies. I didn’t even notice the routine until day three. The gang’s all here. Tissues too. I’ve always said I’m not scared to die because it seems more of my people are on that side. So do I sit here and sob, or remember their love and get up and make them proud?
When us kids got sick growing up, at the tail end of the sickness when you are so tired of soup, mom would treat us by bringing home McDonalds. Nothing tasted better than that soft bun and freedom to come after that delicious filet-o-fish. It meant the worst was over. You were loved. Life was good.
My mom always sewed for a hobby and gifted to everyone everything she made; These past two decades I’m sure we could cover the Northeast with all the fleece blankets she made then gave away. She loved to teach sewing too, always making a point to tell the student, “love was more important than perfection,” and not to be scared to try new things.
Yesterday, I hung up Pop’s robe and put on a coat. Drove to the drive thru but came right back to the couch. Smiling, wrapped in fleece, I ate my fish. The dark cloud of my cold was lifting. Nobody said life was easy. But you’ll see them again. I was loved too much to give up now. Until then, for them - love yourself the most. If they could - they would, so you really should.
