CNY Inspirations: What do you love? - syracuse.com

This feature is coordinated by The Post-Standard/Syracuse.com and InterFaith Works of CNY. Follow this theme and author posted Sunday, Tuesday and Thursday.

Aren’t other people fascinating? Isn’t it fun to ask others about what they love? People get this glow in their eyes, or their whole body is suddenly animated, when they talk about things they love. It can be anything, from the weather in southern France to particle physics (which is beyond me); learning from people is just simply good. Even politics, or religion, things we are not supposed to ask about - you just need to ask “why” a bit more. Why do you feel this way? Why is this so important? In addition, if you listen, the person’s heart opens, and you see who they are at their core.

Life is just too interesting to argue with other people. Listen instead. Listen to what they love, even if you don’t. Just listen. You may not win an argument, but you may gain wisdom you won’t find anywhere else.

The Rev. Tim Hannon is Priest and Rector at Christ Episcopal Church in Manlius, NY.
