ESPN report: Packers to offer Jordan Love top-10 money after draft - Packers Wire

The Green Bay Packers are preparing to sign quarterback Jordan Love to a lucrative contract extension once the 2024 NFL draft is over. At least, that’s what ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler reported during an appearance on SportsCenter on Sunday.

“The Packers are committed to getting something done with Love. He got the proof of concept last year with the big season, so they believe he’s their future,” Fowler said. “This could heat up after the draft. He’s due to make around $10 million next year. Signed a one-year bridge deal last offseason; should be a lot bigger, putting him somewhere probably in the top-10 highest-paid passers.”

The bridge deal Fowler referenced was a one-year extension Love and the team agreed to last spring in lieu of exercising his fifth-year option. Rather than pay him a little over $20 million, which would have been fully guaranteed, the contract lowered Love’s guaranteed money and kept him under contract through the 2024 season. If you’re wondering why a player would sign such a deal, Love can make more than he would have on the fifth-year option, thanks to added incentives.

Basically, it gave the team some flexibility and allowed Love to bet on himself. Both sides are probably happy with their decision.

So far, Love has proven Green Bay right for investing in their future when they made him the 26th overall pick in 2020. After sitting behind Aaron Rodgers for three years, Love threw 4,159 yards and 32 touchdowns while completing 64.2 percent of his passes over 17 starts last season.

Not only did he lead the youngest roster in the NFL to the playoffs in his first season as a starter, but he defeated the two-seeded Dallas Cowboys in the NFC Wild Card Round and nearly pulled off an upset against the San Francisco 49ers in the Divisional Round. Love’s performance down the stretch gave the team all the evidence they needed that he was the next franchise quarterback.

Looking ahead to the expected terms of Love’s next contract, he will have to make upwards of $40 million annually to be a top-10 earner at the position. He is likely to command something closer to $50 million annually.

The timetable for a new deal is also uncertain as both parties have to wait until May 3 because Love signed an extension within the last year. GM Brian Gutekunst indicated at last month’s league meeting that there had been some preliminary contract discussions, but there was no rush to get something done.

“We want to do it the right way,” said Gutekunst. “Certainly, the sooner the better, but at the same time, I think we want to make sure we do it the right way. So, we’ve started, but it’s not something that’s gonna go quickly, I don’t think. It’ll take some time.”
