University of Tampa will display famous 'LOVE' sculpture - Tampa Bay Times

Artist Robert Indiana’s iconic “LOVE” sculptures are found in cities throughout the world. Now, thanks to a donation, Tampa will have its own, set on the grounds of the University of Tampa.

The university purchased the 6-foot sculpture with funds from a donation by Gene and Patsy McNichols. Its in honor of Gene’s father, Robert L. McNichols, who founded the McNichols company, The Hole Story.

The donation will also fund a new sculpture trail, anchored by the “LOVE” sculpture, that will add 15-20 sculptures by to the downtown campus. It will be called the McNichols Sculpture Trail.

Six other sculptures in a variety of media have been acquired for the trail, which will ultimately include some already on campus. Once completed, the trail will have a dedicated website, a self-guided tour and a “conversation guide.”

“LOVE” will be located on a lawn to the east of Plant Hall in front of the Southard Family Building, where it will be visible to students and the public. The installation date of it and the other sculptures is still to come.

While this will be Tampa’s own “LOVE,” it’s not the first time Indiana’s sculptures have been on display here. A retrospective of his works happened at the Tampa Museum of Art in 2018, the same year Indiana died.
