When making a list of the greatest movie couples ever to grace the silver screen, certain pairs instantly spring to mind: Rose and Jack from Titanic. Baby and Johnny from Dirty Dancing. Allie and Noah from The Notebook.
Some of the actors who played these iconic roles had such powerful chemistry, people assumed their love affair played out off-screen as well, leaving audiences to wonder, “Is this the real life? Or is this just fantasy?”
Which brings us to tonight’s cinema-themed blind date, set beneath the twinkling stars on a beautiful rooftop overlooking downtown San Diego. The stars of this featured blind date are Cameron, a cycle instructor who claims he’s unlucky in love, and Reuben, a soon-to-be college grad who doesn’t like to sit still.
Cameron and Reuben have just met in a Cadillac Escalade ESV, courtesy of Lyft, and they’re on their way to the Manchester Grand Hyatt for a sing-along showing of Bohemian Rhapsody, as part of Rooftop Cinema Club’s 2019 season.

Where are you from and where do you live now?
CAMERON: Born and raised in L.A. I live in San Diego now.
REUBEN: I’m from San Francisco and I’ve been in San Diego since 2015, although I have been back and forth quite a bit. I also recently did a five-month stint in Madrid, Spain. I don’t like staying stagnant.
How old are you?
CAMERON: I’m 30.
REUBEN: I’m 22.
What do you do for a living?
CAMERON: I’m an indoor cycling instructor at SPARKCYCLE.
REUBEN: I’m a full-time student at San Diego State University for now. I’ll be graduating soon with a degree in Political Science and minor in Spanish. I’m also a server for an event catering company, a Lyft driver and an intern at Feeding San Diego, a local nonprofit. My long-term career plans are still a work in progress.

Currently, what dating apps can be found on your phone?
CAMERON: I deleted all of my apps within the last six months because I wasn’t having any luck.
REUBEN: Tinder and Grindr.
Where can you be found on the weekends?
CAMERON: Usually doing something outdoors, working or relaxing at home. Pretty low key these days.
REUBEN: It all depends! On a good weekend, you might find me at the beach, hiking Cowles Mountain, on a short road trip or partying in Hillcrest. Otherwise, you can find me working at someone’s wedding or trying to finish a 12-page paper at the local coffee shop.
What are you best at?
CAMERON: I’m great at forming connections with people.
REUBEN: Cooking breakfast fare, knowing random facts, giving massages, learning/understanding languages, talking to people and finding insanely cheap ways to travel.
What do you suck at?
CAMERON: Finding meaningful romantic connections.
REUBEN: Going to the gym, math, remembering the names of songs and eating In-N-Out while driving.
What are you looking for in a date, physical or otherwise?
CAMERON: I’m looking for an equal partner. I appreciate a guy who can check me every once in a while and keep me grounded. It’s important to me that he has confidence and cares for himself.
REUBEN: I’m looking for someone who is compassionate, honest, funny and, above all, can cook a good meal. Physically, tall, dark and handsome doesn’t hurt, but I don’t have an exact type. Being materialistic and egotistical is a huge turn off for me.
Why do you think you’ll be a good date?
CAMERON: I think I would be a great date for someone because I have a good sense of humor, can carry a conversation and ultimately have a lot to give in a romantic connection.
REUBEN: It truly depends on who my date is. I’m very outgoing. I like to listen and ask people questions. I definitely have a lot of life stories and experiences to share. I’ll be a good date for someone who is open, honest and willing to get past the small talk.

CAMERON: Poor manners, obnoxious.
REUBEN: Dirty, unclipped fingernails.
How many people have you slept with?
CAMERON: More than 10, less than 30.
REUBEN: This is a rude question, but about 15?

CAMERON: Interesting and fun to be around.
REUBEN: I want my date to be a moral human being and a total stud.
Will the night end with a kiss, something more or something less?
CAMERON: We will just have to wait and see, won’t we?

Hmm. On paper, these two don’t seem to have that much in common. Wait, scratch that, they both like limes in their cocktails. So, there’s that. And they both… um… have slept with more than 10 people.
Actually, Reuben and Cameron seem to have more things not in common. Reuben is about to graduate college and enter the “real world.” His life is a bit chaotic at the moment, and he describes his career path as being “a work in progress.” Cameron is a bit older and more settled. He says his life is pretty low-key these days.
Reuben also says he’s bad at going to the gym, which might be an issue for Cameron, since his job is literally working out as a cycle instructor. But who knows? Maybe Reuben’s blue eyes will paralyze Cameron (in a hot way) and he’ll be able to look past it.

Cameron and Reuben arrive at Rooftop Cinema Club and are ushered to a romantic table for two. It’s a crisp and clear San Diego evening, and the glittering city is the perfect backdrop for this blind date. Rooftop Cinema Club bills itself as “social cinema,” meaning viewers are encouraged to enjoy the venue’s food, drinks and table games prior to the movie. Rooftop Cinema Club can be found in cities like New York and Los Angeles; it’s the second season in San Diego (the season runs from April through October). Classic crowd-pleasers like Grease, Back to the Future and Selena are screened, and viewers sit in comfy deck chairs (or snuggle up on a loveseat) while wearing wireless headphones that allow them to listen as loudly as they like without disturbing anyone.
Tonight’s screening is a sing-along version of Bohemian Rhapsody, the critically acclaimed film that tells the story of the British band Queen and earned its lead actor, Rami Malek, an Academy Award for Best Actor for his spot-on portrayal of Freddie Mercury.
And with rock anthems like We Will Rock You, Don’t Stop Me Now, Another One Bites the Dust and, of course, Bohemian Rhapsody, played throughout, the audience won’t be able to resist singing along — which is kind of the point.
But before Cameron and Reuben can settle into their loveseat to enjoy the movie, we separate them for their mid-date interviews.
How’s it going so far?
CAMERON: Good. It’s fun. This whole experience is fun.
REUBEN: It has been going really well. I first met him in the Lyft. I don’t think I’ve ever met somebody in a car before. But it wasn’t awkward. He had a really good presence when I first met him. I mean, just his look was really cool. He has his hair bleached, he has all these tattoos and a cool f**king leather jacket. I guess the very first question he asked was a little awkward, because he was like, ‘So, what do you do?’ And I had to explain it because I’m graduating from San Diego State in a week and I’m at a bit of a crossroads in my life and I’m trying to decide exactly what I want to do.
At first glance, would you swipe right or left on your date?
CAMERON: Probably swipe right.
REUBEN: I would swipe right.
Is this the type of person you’d normally date?
CAMERON: No. He’s much younger. I mean, he’s sweet and he’s cute; it’s just an age thing. Life experience, you know.
REUBEN: Probably not. Mostly solely based on the age difference. But it’s not a deal-breaker, not at this point.
How has your experience at Rooftop Cinema Club been?
CAMERON: It’s great. I’ve been to one of these in New York before. It’s always a blast. It’s been a couple years, but I’ve been wanting to come to one in San Diego since I found out they started doing it. It’s gorgeous. It’s the middle of downtown San Diego. You have the ocean air that you can still feel. It’s a beautiful night. Even though the rainy weather is kind of lingering, it’s gorgeous. It’s well-lit.
REUBEN: It’s a really awesome place. It’s pretty cool, there’s this big screen with a view of downtown San Diego. And you get to see the ocean. It’s a really good backdrop. You see the sunset from the other side. I love it.

What’s the most attractive thing your date has done so far?
CAMERON: He’s sweet. He’s expressed a lot of interest.
REUBEN: Just looking at me in the eyes, because he has really pretty eyes.
What’s the least attractive thing your date has done so far?
CAMERON: I’ve had to pull a bit of information from him. It hasn’t been so forthcoming. I don’t get nervous on dates. I mean, at this point, I’ve been on so many sh**ty dates (laughs). But this isn’t one of them! This is a blast.
REUBEN: I don’t have anything unattractive that he’s done so far.
Rate your date on a scale from one to 10 for looks.
CAMERON: Eight.
REUBEN: I’ll give him an eight point five.
And for personality?
CAMERON: Eight.
REUBEN: Nine point five.
Did you have a chance to social stalk them?
CAMERON: No. I don’t pull out my phone on a date. It’s rude.
REUBEN: No, I just met him. I don’t plan on being on my phone during the date.
Do you want to kiss your date right now?
CAMERON: No, not at the moment.
REUBEN: I’m open to it.
Does your date want to kiss you?
CAMERON: Maybe, actually I kind of get that vibe.
REUBEN: I have no idea.
Is this someone you’d take home to mom, or just take home?
CAMERON: He seems like a respectable young man that you could take home.
REUBEN: Take home to mom.
How and when will the date end?
CAMERON: We’ll have to find out.
REUBEN: I honestly have no idea. We still have to watch the movie. He said he has to wake up really early tomorrow, because he’s an early riser. So I have no expectations after this date, but I’ll enjoy it while it lasts.
Despite their age difference, Cameron and Reuben both had near-rave reviews for each other. They each said that they would have right-swiped their date, and that their date was the type of guy they’d take home to meet their friends and family.

And isn’t it refreshing that they both are adamant about not being on their phones during the date?
Cameron and Reuben are ushered to their loveseat as the movie begins and Queen’s song Somebody to Love begins to filter through everyone’s headphones. How appropriate.
It’s still unclear whether the movie will inspire any canoodling in their cozy loveseat, but in any event, at least they’re in for a good show.
Another one bites the dust

As the screening of Bohemian Rhapsody stretches into the evening, the PACIFIC crew departs and leaves the daters to enjoy the rest of the movie and their night.
We caught up with them post-date to see how things went and to find out whether there will be a sequel to their love story.
How was the rest of your night?
CAMERON: It was fun. Very different than any other first date I’ve ever been on (laughs), but it was fun. It was an interesting, different experience. It’s fun to try new things like that.
REUBEN: Overall, it was super awesome. Bohemian Rhapsody has quickly become one of my favorite movies of all time. I saw it when it came out, and so I was super happy to watch it again. It’s one of those classics. As far as the date, we actually had a lot in common, like interesting weird family things we had in common. I’d definitely go back to Rooftop Cinema Club. It was a really good experience. I love doing anything that’s outside, with that view. I’m all about anything that’s an outside terrace.
Where did you go and what did you do for the rest of the evening after the movie?
CAMERON: We just finished up the movie and said our goodbyes and went our separate ways back home.
REUBEN: We just watched the movie and enjoyed it. We went our separate ways afterwards. He had to get up early and had been up (early that morning). We just went our separate ways and exchanged numbers.
When did you get home?
CAMERON: Like 11:30.
REUBEN: Maybe around 11?
Hook up?
CAMERON: No, I don’t think there was a romantic match there, necessarily. But maybe a future friendship.
REUBEN: Absolutely not. His body language during the movie felt a little bit weird. His arms were kind of crossed. I sort of uncrossed mine. But at the point when he didn’t uncross his, I just felt we were going to watch the movie and enjoy it.
What was the best part of the date and why?
CAMERON: Overall, the date was great. It was a totally fun experience. I don’t know if I could single out one specific time. (Laughs) Maybe like, when we got first there and we kept getting pulled in so many different directions.
REUBEN: I would say the best part of the date was the movie, because it’s one of my favorite movies ever.
What was the worst part of the date and why?
CAMERON: (Laughs) The first shot of tequila I had.
REUBEN: Well, I would say a couple times, when I asked a question, and we got to talking, like, I asked him, ‘What’s your sign?’ And he told me he was a Virgo and he told me about his sign. And when he got done talking about that, he never asked me about mine. There were a couple questions that weren’t reciprocated, if that makes sense. He asked me other questions, but he wouldn’t ask me the same ones, which was a little frustrating.
Do you follow each other on Instagram?
CAMERON: No.
REUBEN: I actually did not follow him on Instagram.
Will there be a second date? Why or why not?
CAMERON: Probably not.
REUBEN: I don’t think a second date, but I think we might hang out as friends.
Do you have any dating tips for your date?
CAMERON: I think he would be a fine date, I just don’t think that we’re necessarily a match. With the right guy, he’d be a great date. He’s a very nice guy.
REUBEN: I think Cameron is a super awesome guy and he’s a great date. I guess the only thing, like I said, was to reciprocate the questions. But that was only a couple times, so that’s not that big of a deal.

Well, dear readers, there you have it. According to Reuben, the best part of the date was the movie, and not his actual date, Cameron. Reuben felt that Cameron wasn’t as interested in him, at least not interested in him enough to ask the important questions, like what his astrological sign was. Also, Cameron’s crossed arms during the movie signaled to Reuben that there wasn’t going to be any mid-movie hand-holding.
Even though Cameron and Reuben aren’t walking away from this date singing We Are the Champions, there don’t appear to be any hard feelings, either. Both agree they while they weren’t a romantic match, they would be open to friendship, which is never a bad thing.
