Love Again Movie Review: Just another love story - TOI Etimes

Story: After losing her fiancé, Mira Ray (Priyanka Chopra Jonas) tries to cope with her grief by sending texts to his old number, which are read by music journalist Rob Burns (Sam Heughan).

Review: Dealing with her ex's sudden death proves to be challenging for Mira. Egged on by her sister, she tries to move on with dating apps but can’t find the connection she seeks. Meanwhile, she tries to process the loss of her fiancé by texting her thoughts to his old number, much to the surprise of Rob, who’s intrigued by this woman he’s never met before. This distracts him as he interviews Celine Dion, who plays herself, before she sets out on her new tour.

We don’t get much time to know Mira’s ex before his tragic death, so it’s entirely up to Priyanka Chopra Jonas to draw us into her character’s grief with her performance. She manages to pull this off, but then the narrative loses us when it shifts towards Rob (Sam Heughan). A music journalist who doesn’t know Celine Dion’s music is a strange choice for the character, and it doesn’t help that there’s no backstory to Rob either. Furthermore, as Rob’s fascination for this mystery woman builds, he chooses to stalk her, leading to their meet-cute almost halfway through the film. A short cameo features Nick Jonas in ironic casting as he plays a single-minded jock to hilarious effect. On the other hand, Celine Dion plays an agony aunt/love-guru character, which is compelling. She talks about losing her real-life husband, René, and it is the film's most intriguing and heartfelt aspect. You don’t need to be a fan to relate to her feelings.

Beyond that, though, any explorations of grief and trauma are quickly thrown out. Scenes aren’t allowed to breathe with odd editing choices, probably due to the choppy screenplay. The film’s pace is tedious, with only brief moments of levity brought on by the cameos. Even the lead pair’s chemistry is up for debate. Love Again’s rehashed plot can’t help falling prey to all the rom-com tropes by being sappy and entirely predictable with more cringe than comedy.

Adblock test (Why?)
