Queen Charlotte filming blunder made that romantic queer love scene better - Digital Spy

Queen Charlotte spoilers follow.

Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story has finally given fans of the Shonda Rhimes period drama a queer love story to rival the headline romances we've seen so far.

Reynolds and Brimsley's story unfolds over the course of the season, with plenty of memorable moments, including that scene where the couple dance together, which is interwoven with an older version of Brimsley dancing on his own.

Speaking exclusively to Digital Spy, actors Freddie Dennis (Reynolds) and Sam Clemmett (Brimsley) broke down the scene and pointed to a mistake they made that actually made it into the edit and, in their opinion, improved the scene.

"From the perspective of actually filming it, we had weeks and weeks and weeks of dance rehearsals. Dancing isn’t necessarily something that comes easy to all of us. So we were all just trying to drill it, and drill it, and drill it," Clemmett explained.

"It got super-near, and it was a night shoot at Blenheim Palace. It was about quarter-past three in the morning. We had about 40 minutes left to get our coverage done, and then move to do a huge bit of coverage. So it all just sort of happened really, really quickly, and it was kind of chaotic, and it was really nerve-wracking and we got three or four takes to do it.

"I think that energy sort of fed the scene, because it is two people that are stealing like another five minutes away from everyone else, away from their duty, to spend time together. And that’s always really exhilarating – and nerve-wracking as well.

"We were so nervous – there’s a particular take that one of us, or maybe both of us, messed up the dance, and then we fall into a fit of hysterics. That’s actually in the final episode. That made the cut. So watching that moment where we had messed up, and we know we’ve kind of messed up, just brought the joy of what that scene is, and what it meant to us."

"I completely agree. I love that moment for so many reasons, but also for me and Sam as actors," Dennis added. "Watching it back, I love it because it’s one of those few moments of unadulterated joy that Reynolds and Brimsley experience. Also I love it because it reminds me of what a brilliant time we all had on set.

"There is that moment that we touched upon where I see – I probably shouldn’t say this — but I see myself. And I see myself having the best time ever, and laughing with one of my best friends. It’s really powerful to watch."

While the inclusion of the franchise's first gay relationship is very welcome, we feel like there's still room for improvement.

Bridgerton seasons 1-2 and Queen Charlotte are streaming now on Netflix. Season 3 is in production.
