Erie businesses feel the love as Valentine’s Day approaches - YourErie

Love is in the air as Todd Young, general manager of Oliver’s Rooftop, said staff is expecting a full house on Valentine’s Day.

“We still have a little bit to fill up in the late afternoon, but for that entire evening we are lucky enough to be 100% full,” said Young.

Young stated Oliver’s typically sees a high volume of customers on intimate holidays, as they were voted the most romantic restaurant in the area. So, it will be all hands on deck with staffing.

“We are fully staffed, and it’s exciting for us, especially in the February months (which is) typically one of our slower times of the year. Being by the waterfront, we do see our elevated business in the summertime,” said Young.

Over at a floral store on Peach Street, Carl Larese, the owner of Larese Floral Design, said this Valentine’s Day is shaping up to be one of the best in years.

“Always happens when Valentine’s Day is in the middle of the week. It’s always so much busier because guys want to send flowers to their loved ones at work,” said Larese.

He said sales are up 30%-40% this year compared to last year with people sending flowers days leading up to the holiday.

“Today, we already have probably 150. Tomorrow, I know we’re upwards of 300 to 400, and Wednesday I don’t even want to know,” said Larese. “We tend to talk people into mixed arrangements. Something like you’re seeing right there. Not just roses because then it’ll last longer.”

With Valentine’s Day falling in the middle of the week, Young said it typically creates sporadic business.

“When the holiday normally falls in the middle of the week, like this, you will see the business spread out. Even just our last Saturday was an increase in business as well,” stated Young. “Our chef has prepared some incredible dishes including a nice ginger swordfish and some incredible sea scallops that are panseared.”

Larese said they cannot promise times that flower arrangements will be made, so it is best to send flowers a day or two before to ensure they will have them by Valentine’s Day.
