Kevin D. Gordon: Improving Oklahomans’ health through secure electronic platforms - Oklahoman.com

• Cost and connection of EHR technology and HIEs is a challenge, especially because fast and reliable internet access is still limited in some areas in Oklahoma. Federal regulators explain that access to broadband internet is a requirement for telehealth programs, which require transmission of high quality audio and video data as well as text and images. While Oklahoma now has 46 internet providers, covering 89% of the population, we are still ranked 43rd nationally in broadband internet access.

• As with all electronically stored and accessed information, privacy and cybersecurity challenges exist. Recognition of these potential problems has been at the forefront of federal and state laws from the beginning of HIEs with required security protocols to protect against hacking and related cybersecurity challenges. More next week about these challenges, protections, their effectiveness, and responses to breaches in security.
