Love - Journal Review

Andria Grady | Journal Review

Life has not always been easy for Mike and Karen Gray, but the two have found a lifetime of happiness in each other’s company.

Though the couple has intellectual disabilities, they have not let those stop them from experiencing the greatest gift of all: Love.

On Sept. 27, 1997, Michael “Mike” Gray and Karen Van Pelt were wed in holy matrimony at the Smartsburg Christian Church. Karen wore a beautiful white satin long-sleeved gown with a lace overlay. A special gold necklace from a friend and crowning veil accented the dress. White roses and ivy made up her bouquet.

Mike was also dressed to the nines in a full black tuxedo and bowtie.

Attendants for the couple were Martha McLaughlin and Jason Gravens. Surrounded by family and friends, the couple recited their vows with immense joy.

Their love has stood the test of time. The couple recently celebrated their 25th wedding anniversary at Ben Hur Health and Rehabilitation, where they reside.

Moore’s Jewelry gifted new wedding bands selected by the couple. A punch and cupcake reception was held with fellow Ben Hur residents and their Ability Services Inc. family. Ben Hur also hosted a special evening meal as part of the festivities. Cards and small gifts were given to the Grays, commemorating their special day.

Mike is looking forward to playing the Wii, especially bowling after the celebrations. He and Karen often do this together. Karen, who loves to paint, plans to create a few new artworks.

Above all, each said spending time together was their favorite activity.
