10 Best Love Stories In Horror Movies, Ranked - Screen Rant

Mentions of death, murder, and suicide.

Summary

  • Horror movies often incorporate love stories into their plots, adding an emotional layer to the scares.
  • Some love stories in horror movies are tragic, while others have a successful and cute dynamic.
  • Love stories in horror movies can be the main focus or a subplot, but they often help the audience connect with the film on a deeper level.

Horror movies are not only about monsters, murderers, and scaring the audience, as there are many that also have love stories, though not all of them have a happy ending. The horror genre has mixed with other genres for decades, making way for some interesting combinations that have brought to life interesting stories. Comedy horror and sci-fi horror are some of the most popular combinations, but there are also drama and even romance horror movies, which guarantee a good dose of love and heartbreak along with some scares.

In some cases, horror movies didn’t need to mix with other genres to add love stories to their plots. These love stories aren’t always the main focus of the story and are treated as a subplot, but more often than not, they steal the spotlight. In other cases, these love stories are important to the plot, but that also means that many won’t have a happy ending. The horror genre has seen a variety of love stories – some tragic, others successful, some silly and even cute – adding a layer of emotion that, in the end, further helps the movie connect with the audience.

10 Nancy & Glen - A Nightmare On Elm Street

A Nightmare on Elm Street Nancy and glen

Amidst Freddy Krueger’s murders in A Nightmare On Elm Street was the relationship between Nancy (Heather Langenkamp) and Glen (Johnny Depp). Although they were both young, Nancy and Glen had a very sweet and wholesome relationship, and not even the tragedies happening around them could break their bond. Even though Glen was skeptical of Nancy’s theory of Krueger killing people in their dreams, he was supportive of her. Unfortunately, this is one couple that didn’t have a happy ending, as Glen forgot Nancy’s warning about falling asleep and was brutally killed by Freddy Krueger in one of the most shocking scenes in the movie.

9 Michael & Star - The Lost Boys

The Lost Boys Star and Michael

While David and his crew of vampires created chaos across town and Sam and the Frog Brothers came up with a plan to stop them, Sam’s older brother, Michael (Jason Patric) was getting to know Star (Jami Gertz). Like Michael, Star was half vampire and half human, and this difficult situation helped them bond even more. Saving Star and turning her human again was part of Michael’s motivation to get rid of David and the leader of the vampires, and though it’s unknown what happened to them after the events of The Lost Boys, it would be safe to assume they continued their relationship.

8 Dewey Riley & Gale Weathers - Scream Saga

Dewey and Gale in Scream 2

The Scream saga saw its first Final Girl, Sidney Prescott, in some complicated and tragic relationships, but the ones who stole the show were Gale (Courteney Cox) and Dewey Riley (David Arquette). After Gale used Dewey in the first movie to get information, they reunited in Scream 2 and teamed up again to catch the new Ghostface killer. The attraction between Gale and Riley was evident in Scream 2, but it went through a couple of obstacles in Scream 3.

Scream 4 revealed Gale and Dewey got married after the events of Scream 3, but by the time of the events of Scream (2022), they were separated. Sadly, Dewey was killed in Scream (2022), giving a tragic ending to a complex relationship that overcame many issues, including deaths and serial killers.

7 Tree & Carter - Happy Death Day

Happy Death Day Tree and Carter

Happy Death Day’s protagonist, Tree (Jessica Rothe), has an unusual love story with Carter (Israel Broussard). As Tree kept repeating the same day over and over again and dying, she developed a close bond with Carter, as she kept waking up in his dorm room. For Tree, their relationship developed in a linear way, but for Carter, it was too fast (but he didn’t seem to have a problem with that).

Still, Carter helped Tree every time the loop reset even though he obviously didn’t know they had been through the same multiple times, and when the loop finally ended, Tree and Carter continued their romance, which even survived an alternate timeline in Happy Death Day 2U.

6 Brad & Janet - The Rocky Horror Picture Show

Rocky Horror Picture Show Brad and Janet

Brad (Barry Bostwick) and Janet (Susan Sarandon) surely weren’t expecting meeting Dr. Frank-N-Furter and his people shortly after becoming engaged. Brad and Janet were definitely in love, but their relationship seemed quite innocent even though they weren’t teenagers anymore. Their relationship was put to test when Frank seduced both separately and when Janet seduced Rocky, Frank’s creation, leading to a series of strange and heartbreaking events. Still, Janet and Brad’s relationship survived all that, which in a way, served as the weirdest and most extreme love test they could have been given.

5 Bev & Ben - It: Chapter Two

The Losers Club looks up in the movie It.

The romance between Bev and Ben in Stephen King’s IT is followed through two different phases: their childhood and their adulthood. When they were kids, Ben wrote a poem for Bev that she thought was from Bill, and it wasn’t until they reunited as adults that she learned the truth. Bev had just escaped from an abusive marriage, and she found safety and love in Ben. Their shared trauma due to their encounters with Pennywise allowed them to connect at a deep level, and by the end of the book and the movies, Ben and Bev were finally giving their love a chance.

4 Louis & Claudia - Interview with the Vampire

Interview with the Vampire Louis hugging Claudia

While it can be argued that the real romance in Interview with the Vampire is between Lestat (Tom Cruise) and Louis (Brad Pitt), there’s also the relationship between Claudia (Kirsten Dunst) and Louis. This pair is a special one as Claudia was turned into a vampire as a 10-year-old, but mentally and emotionally, she continued to grow. Claudia and Louis became very close and Claudia fell in love with Louis, and their relationship was innocent and loving as they were each other’s companions for decades, but it was also tragic. Claudia was killed by another group of vampires, while Louis was imprisoned in a coffin so he couldn’t save her, and he carried the guilt for the rest of his days.

3 Barbara & Adam - Beetlejuice

Geena Davis and Alec Baldwin in Beetlejuice

Beetlejuice’s Adam (Alec Baldwin) and Barbara Maitland (Geena Davis) are the perfect example of love overcoming life and death. Adam and Barbara died in a car accident but didn’t cross into the afterlife, so they stayed on Earth, trapped at their country home. Adam and Barbara’s relationship survived death and limbo, as well as meeting Beetlejuice and his many chaotic actions. Adam and Barbara were a solid couple in life and even more in death, as they tried to cross into the afterlife together and stayed together as ghosts as they found happiness in their new situation.

2 Seth & Veronica - The Fly

Jeff Goldblum and Geena Davis kissing in The Fly

The Fly is not only one of the greatest sci-fi horror movies ever made but also one of the most tragic love stories in the horror genre. The Fly follows Seth (Jeff Goldblum) and Veronica’s (Geena Davis) relationship from beginning to end, from their first meeting at an event to Veronica’s heartbreaking decision after Seth’s transformation. Veronica and Seth quickly fell in love after spending time together as Seth showed her his teleporter, and even as he transformed into a grotesque creature, Veronica still loved him, even if he made it hard to do so. Seth and Veronica’s story doesn’t end well, though what Veronica did can be seen as an act of love, and the chemistry between them can’t be denied.

1 Dracula & Elisabeta - Bram Stoker’s Dracula

Mina and Dracula kissing in Bram Stoker's Dracula

Bram Stoker’s Dracula has a love story that transcended time, but it’s also a tragic one. Vlad Dracula (Gary Oldman) was married to Elisabeta (Winona Ryder), but as he fought against the Turks, Elisabeta committed suicide as she was told her husband had been killed. After being told by a priest that her soul would be damned to Hell for killing herself, Vlad desecrated the chapel and renounced God, promising to rise from the grave to avenge his wife with all the powers of darkness. Centuries passed and Dracula never got over Elisabeta’s death, but when he saw Mina Murray (Ryder), he was sure she was Elisabeta’s reincarnation.

After some obstacles, Dracula claimed Mina as his bride and began transforming her into a vampire, but in the end, he was defeated by Jonathan Harker, Mina’s fiancé. Mina, as Elisabeta, put Dracula out of his misery by stabbing him in the heart, and the movie ends with a look at a fresco of Vlad and Elisabeta ascending to heaven together. Dracula looked for his deceased loved one for centuries, and though he was destined for a tragic ending, he reunited with his beloved wife.
